How to apply: A person applying for this award will need to complete the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service Awards Program nomination form and submit it with three letters of reference from individuals knowledgeable about the applicant’s program leadership.

The many friends and colleagues of Dr. Edgar J. and Ethel B. Boone joined them in establishing the Edgar J. and Ethel B. Boone Adult Education Award as a tribute to Dr. Boone and his wife. Dr. Boone is the founding Head of the Department of Adult and Community College Education at NC State University and a retired Assistant Director of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service. This award is dedicated to outstanding service and achievement for field faculty in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service for the purpose of helping them continue their professional development.

Outstanding current field faculty in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service are eligible to receive this annual professional development award.

This award may be used for professional development opportunities including, but not limited to conferences, self-designed tours of Extension education programs, special workshops, seminars and educational study tours.

Application Narrative Requirements:

All applicants must include an Application as well as Reference Letters

Submit a typed double-spaced narrative – limited to no more than 3 pages that include:
  1. Outline your Extension employment history and Extension accomplishments (within the past five years, including impacts) 
  2. Outline your higher education history. 
  3. Describe: 

  • The professional development activities you have undertaken in the past five years. 
  • Future plans for professional development. 
  • The graduate education program in which you are enrolled and how the program relates to your current position in CES. 
  • How the program will enhance your professional competencies to provide leadership within CES.

Reference Letters

Applicants will also be required to submit 2 letters of recommendation.  

One of the reference letters must be from the applicant's immediate supervisor.
