Extension Marketing and Communications

The NC State Extension Marketing and Communications team (Extension MarComm) promotes the ongoing growth and success of Extension by helping tell our collective stories, supporting employee outreach, and providing the framework for building a strong brand identity.

Our team provides strategic communications expertise, project consultation, marketing training and resource development services that increase the visibility and value of Extension, while helping county and campus programs elevate their impacts.

How We Work

Our team operates as a unit of CALS Communications, leveraging an integrated communications approach that incorporates expertise in digital and print storytelling, public relations, marketing, graphic design and brand management.

While our team is based at NC State, we often work with our colleagues at N.C. A&T State University and other valuable partners to support both our university and our N.C. Cooperative Extension partnership efforts.

Extension MarComm provides resources like the Extension Brand Site, Marketing and Communications Newsletter, Extension Impacts / Annual Report and Online Store, as well as individual campaigns and an array of support tools.

Strategic Marketing Goals

We strive to cultivate consistent, purpose-driven communications linked to organizational priorities across all of Extension. To navigate the endless opportunities at Extension, we operate through a strategic marketing plan that helps us prioritize our time and resources.

Our current strategic focus involves:

  1. Building Brand Ambassadors – we work from the inside out to ensure that employees are well-equipped to grow our Extension brand
  2. Reinforcing Extension’s Expertise and Leadership – Extension is the best in the business; we need to make sure people know it
  3. Expanding Our Reach to New Audiences – we build awareness beyond our traditional audiences (see Homegrown), helping ensure that Extension will remain relevant for years to come
  4. Promoting the Depth of Extension to Current Audiences – current clients may not realize the scope of Extension; we introduce them to other aspects of our work and open new doors

Our Brand

Our Extension brand identity is much more than a logo. Our brand is the sum of who we are, all that we do and how people perceive us — from addressing local challenges with research-based solutions and a stellar customer experience, to serving as a trusted partner and improving the lives of North Carolinians.

The Extension brand site includes information and tools that you’ll need to promote your efforts and help establish our collective brand identity.

Our Brand Platform is the foundation of our organizational identity and all communications.

Everyone who’s part of Extension plays a critical role in building our brand identity. To bring our brand to life, our approach to marketing and communications must be intentional, strategic and purposeful.

  • Intentional and Strategic – Telling the stories of Extension’s people, programs, innovation and impact that resonate with clients, stakeholders, partners and neighbors
  • Purpose-driven – Rooted in our mission to grow North Carolina, focused on introducing and reinforcing our work. Who we are. What we do. Why we are vital.
