Big Rains, Big Floods

A creek flooding a forest in North CarolinaAgents,

Many of you have helped install stormwater control measures/ best management practices in your counties. Thank you! Very few of these practices will provide a discernible impact with Hurricane Florence, however.

Only in areas that receive 4″ or less might flooding be noticeably mitigated by human-designed practices. In fact, once the rainfall totals exceed 6-7″, differences in flooding from urban and rural areas will be modest. Per 8 a.m. projections, most of the state will see at least 5″, with SE North Carolina to receive in excess of 15″.

To put it bluntly, there is nothing to be done except avoid creeks that are sure to swell. Good luck and stay safe!
