Extension MarComm operates as a unit of CALS Communications, leveraging an integrated communications approach that incorporates expertise in digital and print storytelling, marketing, public relations, graphic design and brand management.

Our team supports both our university (NC State Extension) and N.C. Cooperative Extension partnership efforts, providing resources like the Extension Brand Site, local marketing planning, communications training, Extension impacts / annual report, Homegrown video series and online store. We also coordinate state and local campaigns, while equipping Extension experts with an array of tools and templates.

To extend research-based knowledge to all North Carolinians, helping them transform science into everyday solutions that improve their lives and grow our state.

Extension MarComm Mission
To elevate the impacts of Extension experts statewide and provide strategic communications solutions that promote the ongoing success and prosperity of Extension and our stakeholders.

Our Marketing Goals

We operate through a strategic marketing plan that supports Extension and CALS strategic goals, while helping us prioritize projects, optimize resources and maximize impact. Among our key goals, we will:

  • Build Brand Ambassadors – we work from the inside out to ensure that employees are equipped to elevate their work and grow our Extension brand
  • Reinforce Extension’s Expertise and Leadership – Extension is the best in the business; we need to make sure people know it and see us as a resource
  • Expand Our Reach to New Audiences – we grow awareness beyond traditional audiences, helping ensure that Extension remains relevant for years to come
  • Promote Extension’s Impact and Value – to sustain Extension’s success and relevance, stakeholders must understand our promise to grow North Carolina

Who to Contact

Following is a generalized guide to help you connect with the most appropriate person:

  • Simon Gonzalez — contact with story ideas or questions about story development, writing, etc. (or submit story ideas here)
  • Julie Hayworth-Perman — covers all 4-H programming and is the primary contact for all Extension county centers (as well as swag / apparel requests)
  • Debra Ireland — contact with questions on peer-reviewed publications and/or departmental fact sheets (see Extension publication guidelines and processes)
  • Caro Metzler — can assist with social media questions from general planning and brand guidelines to channel creation and content strategy
  • Justin Moore — can be contacted with questions about branding, project planning, Homegrown videos, new resource requests, campus initiatives and generally any marketing-related topics (primary default contact)

Depending on the project, our team roles often overlap with one another and/or our colleagues from CALS Comm., but this should get you going in the right direction. You can also share a story idea or request a project to get started!
