Septic Systems & Saturated Soils

— Written By

If you are on a septic system and were impacted by Hurricane Matthew, read on! To operate properly, septic systems require oxygen in the soil. In other words, unsaturated soil. If you still have standing water over your drainfield or saturated soil (very squishy), it is highly recommended that you limit the amount of water that you use within your home.

Limiting water use will help the system function during these stressed conditions. If possible, take laundry to a laundromat, take very short showers, and minimize other uses of water. As gross as it may sound, it’s a good time to practice “if it’s yellow, let it mellow”. Otherwise, the saturated conditions can promote surfacing of effluent in the yard and back-ups into the home. Sluggish gurgling drains – that normally behave – are one indicator that the system is struggling to handle the amount of water being used.
